SHM Group Receives Certification for India’s First Indigenous Lifeboat from IRS

National | 25th February 2026:

India’s maritime sector has taken a step forward in strengthening domestic safety manufacturing, with the country’s first indigenous lifeboat receiving certification from the Indian Register of Shipping, on behalf of the Directorate General of Shipping.

The lifeboat has been manufactured by SHM Group (SHM Shipcare Pvt. Ltd.), a company engaged in maritime safety systems, shipbuilding, and engineering services, in partnership with Palfinger Marine, a global manufacturer headquartered in Austria. The certification indicates that the vessel meets internationally recognised maritime safety, engineering, and regulatory standards.

This marks a significant step forward in supporting India’s push toward building indigenous maritime capabilities and ensuring safer coastal and offshore operations.

As India continues to expand its maritime infrastructure and shipping ecosystem, the availability of locally manufactured safety equipment is expected to play an important role in improving responsiveness, maintenance support, and operational readiness across ports, offshore operations, and coastal fleets.

Commenting on the milestone, Saifuddin Hajee, Chairman, SHM Group, said:

“Receiving this certification from IRS is an important milestone for SHM. It reflects our commitment to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision while upholding the highest standards of quality and regulatory compliance in everything we build and deliver. As we look ahead, we remain focused on innovation and operational excellence in the maritime safety and shipbuilding industry.”

SHM has always been committed to enabling freedom at sea, anchoring Indian maritime safety.
