National | 24th March 2026:
Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has felicitated SHM Group (SHM Shipcare Pvt. Ltd.) for the courage and swift action displayed by its crew during the Gateway of India ferry boat capsizing incident. The felicitation ceremony was held at the MMB office in Fort, Mumbai, recognising the pivotal role SHM's pilot boats played in rescuing hundreds of people in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.
When the ferry capsized near the iconic Gateway of India, SHM Group's pilot boats were among the first vessels to reach the scene. The crew conducted rapid rescue operations, pulling survivors from the water and coordinating efforts with emergency response agencies, contributing significantly to the scale of lives saved that day.
The felicitation was presented by Nitesh Rane, Minister of Ports, Maharashtra, who acknowledged the bravery and presence of mind demonstrated by the SHM team. The MMB felicitation adds to a growing list of recognition SHM Group has received for its role in the rescue. In 2025, the company was also honoured by Apollo Hospital, Vashi, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) for the same rescue efforts.
Commenting on the recognition, Aliasagar Hajee, CEO of Shipbuilding, SHM Group, said:
"We are humbled by this recognition. When it was happening, the priority was simply to get everyone out safely. It is our duty to respond in such situations. We are very grateful for this honour and the real credit belongs to every single person who was out there on the water that day."
